A perfect day in Salento

Many travelers pass through Salento just for Cocora and miss the town itself. This is the day we recommend whenever someone asks us over breakfast: "so, what should I do today?"

7:30 am — A slow breakfast

Start in the garden: Quindío coffee, fruit and arepas while the hummingbirds make their morning rounds. If you're staying in a private room, breakfast is on us.

9:00 am — Calle Real and its balconies

Carrera 6 is the most photogenic street in the Coffee Region: colorful balconies, artisan workshops and third-wave cafés. Go early, before the tour buses arrive.

10:30 am — Alto de la Cruz viewpoint

Climb the stairs at the end of Calle Real (~250 steps, take it easy). From the top you'll see the Quindío river valley and, on a clear day, the snow peaks. Free and spectacular.

12:30 pm — Trout, the mandatory lunch

Salento's signature dish is trucha con patacón (trout with fried plantain). You'll find it at any restaurant on the square; order it al ajillo and thank us later.

2:00 pm — Tejo and coffee

Two afternoon plans:

• Tejo: Colombia's national sport involves throwing a metal puck at gunpowder targets that explode. At the local tejo courts you play for free as long as you order a few beers. Unmissable and very social.
• Or visit a nearby coffee farm to understand what's behind your cup — ask us about tours with our coffee-growing neighbors.

5:30 pm — Sunset on the square

Plaza de Bolívar comes alive at dusk: ice cream, roasted-corn carts, entire families out for a stroll. Grab a coffee to go and watch the town drift by.

7:30 pm — A night in the oasis

End where you started: bonfire by the fireplace, jacuzzi under the stars, or an arepa night with the other travelers at the hostel.

Only one full day in Salento? Do Cocora at dawn and the second half of this itinerary in the afternoon. It's doable — our guests pull it off all the time.
