La Carbonera: the other wax palm forest (without the crowds)
How to visit La Carbonera from Salento: the region's largest wax palm forest, along the old road to Toche, far from mass tourism.

Everyone comes to Salento for the Cocora Valley. Very few know that a couple of hours down a dirt road, along the old route toward Toche, there's a valley where the wax palms aren't counted in thousands but in hundreds of thousands — and where you can easily spend a whole morning without crossing paths with another traveler. It's called La Carbonera, and it's one of those secrets we love whispering over breakfast.
What is La Carbonera
It's a rural district on the ridge of the cordillera, between Salento and the village of Toche (Tolima), at about 2,900 meters. Here grows what's considered the largest concentration of wax palms in existence: entire hillsides carpeted with Colombia's national tree, fog rolling in and out, and not a single line for the photo.
The honest comparison with Cocora: Cocora has the infrastructure, the marked trails and the famous postcard; La Carbonera has the scale, the silence and the feeling of having discovered something.
Getting there from Salento
There's no reliable public transport, so your options are:
- Willys jeep tour (the classic): half a day along the old road to Toche — pure mountain track with viewpoint stops. The most comfortable option and the one we recommend most.
- By mountain bike: for trained legs; some tours ride up by jeep and pedal back down.
- On horseback or hiking: slower, more intimate versions of the same landscape, along stretches of the old Camino Nacional that once connected IbaguĂ© with QuindĂo.
Prices vary with group size and whether lunch is included — ask us at reception and we'll get you a quote from trusted local operators, or check our tours.
House tips
- Bring cash and eat a good breakfast: up there, there are no shops and no signal.
- Dress warm: it's almost 1,000 meters higher than Salento; the weather turns in minutes.
- Start early: the afternoon fog is beautiful but hides the palms right when you want the photo.
- If you have energy left, some tours stretch to Toche, a tiny coffee village frozen in time.
The perfect plan: La Carbonera in the morning, then the hostel's garden jacuzzi and a good coffee in the afternoon. That's exploring like a local.
La Carbonera is the star of day 4 in our 5-day itinerary. If you're coming with time to spare, book your room and we'll help you arrange the whole plan — write to us anytime.
