Anzoátegui to Salento: the secret traverse to Nevado del Tolima

The Nevado del Tolima route that starts in Anzoátegui and ends in the Cocora Valley: day by day, logistics and why it's the cordillera's most beautiful traverse.

Mountain camp on the route to Nevado del Tolima

There are many ways up Nevado del Tolima, but only one turns the mountain into a full traverse: entering through Anzoátegui, on the eastern side of the cordillera, crossing over the summit and descending the other side to the Cocora Valley and Salento. Whole days of páramo with no company but frailejones, and a happy ending we know well: the final stage finishes, literally, one block from our front door.

Why this route

  • Real solitude: while the classic routes are shared, on this side groups usually have the entire páramo to themselves.
  • Smart acclimatization: the approach is gradual, gaining altitude day by day — your body will thank you on summit night.
  • No repeated scenery: being a traverse, every stage is new territory, from Tolima's potato farms to Quindío's palms.

Day by day (typical 4-day version)

  1. Reach Anzoátegui and climb to the high farms. Anzoátegui is a farming village perched on the cordillera, a good couple of hours from Ibagué by mountain road. From there, a jeep and a hike take you to the last farms, where you sleep the first night.
  2. High farms → páramo camp. A day of steady ascent to the high camp, at around 4,400 meters. Frailejones to the horizon and your first views of the glacier.
  3. Summit day. A pre-dawn start (2–3 am), the glacier with crampons and rope, sunrise from 5,220 meters with Ruiz and Santa Isabel on the horizon — then the descent into the páramo on the Quindío side.
  4. Páramo → Cocora → Salento. The most rewarding descent: cloud forest, the Estrella de Agua sector and a triumphant entrance into the Cocora Valley among wax palms. Jeep to Salento, and time to celebrate.

Timings vary with the operator and the weather; some groups stretch it to 5 days to sleep better and suffer less.

Logistics and tips

  • Certified guide only: this is high mountain terrain with a glacier, and on a traverse the logistics (mules, permits, meals) weigh double. Write to us and we'll connect you with trusted local operators.
  • Ditch the big bag: make it a true traverse — leave your city luggage stored with us (free) and pick it up when you reach Salento.
  • Pack properly: our complete Tolima packing list applies point by point.
  • Train the altitude first: if you have spare days, Paramillo del Quindío is the perfect dress rehearsal.

The ritual of those arriving from the traverse: garden jacuzzi, trout with fried plantain, and twelve hours of sleep. We've seen it many times, and it never fails.

Finishing the traverse with us? Book your bed or room for arrival night — after four days in a tent, it'll feel like a five-star hotel.
