Nevado del Tolima: every route to its 5,220 meters
We compare the routes up Nevado del Tolima: via the Cocora Valley, via Ibagué and via Anzoátegui — duration, difficulty and which one to choose.

Nevado del Tolima (5,220 m) is Colombia's perfect volcano: a white cone peeking out from behind the páramo that becomes an obsession for anyone who's seen it from afar. The good news: there's more than one way to the summit. The better news: one of them starts, literally, one block from our front door.
The three classic routes
| Route | Duration | Character | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cocora Valley | 4–5 days | Scenic and gradual | Most mortals |
| Ibagué (El Rancho) | 2–3 days | Express and steep | Acclimatized mountaineers |
| Anzoátegui | 3–4 days | The solitary one | Crowd escapers |
1. Via the Cocora Valley (from Salento)
The queen route and the one we recommend most. You enter through the same Cocora Valley of wax palm fame, gaining altitude gradually through cloud forest, the Estrella de Agua sector (yes, like us — the name comes from the same legend) and the frailejón páramo, sleeping in farms and camps along the way. Gradual acclimatization is its great advantage: more days, but far better summit odds.
2. Via Ibagué (El Rancho)
The shortest and steepest way: up the Combeima canyon, past the El Rancho hot springs. You climb a lot in very little time, which makes it brutal without prior acclimatization. Its ace up the sleeve: natural hot springs waiting for you on the way down.
3. Via Anzoátegui
The volcano's hidden face: an approach from the northeast, through potato farms and páramos where there's nobody around. Many groups combine it with a descent to Salento in a full cordillera-to-cordillera traverse. We dedicated a whole article to this route, because it deserves it.
What never changes, whichever you choose
- A certified guide, always: the glacier has crevasses and the weather turns in minutes. We work with trusted local guides — ask us about dates and prices.
- Acclimatization: arrive at least two days early; Salento (1,900 m) plus a Cocora hike is the best training. Paramillo del Quindío is the deluxe preparation.
- Gear: go through our complete packing list before closing your backpack.
Salento: the base camp with a jacuzzi
If you choose the Cocora route (or the traverse from Anzoátegui), your expedition starts and ends in Salento. Our favorite plan for mountaineering guests: arrive two nights early to acclimatize, leave your big backpack stored for free while you climb, and come back straight to a warm bed, a queue-free hot shower and the garden jacuzzi. Summits are best celebrated that way.
