Salento in 7 days: town, palms and high mountains

A full week in Salento: Cocora, coffee, waterfalls, La Carbonera and a high-altitude trek to Paramillo del Quindío or Nevado del Tolima.

High mountain landscape on the route to Nevado del Tolima

A week in Salento is the complete plan: enough for the town, the coffee, the palms… and for what almost nobody takes home from Colombia — real high mountains, with frailejones, páramo and sunrises at 4,000 meters. Here's how we build it.

Days 1 and 2: the base

The first two days are our 2-day itinerary as is: Calle Real and the viewpoint on arrival day, then the full Cocora Valley loop the next morning (guide here). Besides being unmissable, these days serve a serious purpose: acclimatization. Salento sits at 1,900 meters and Cocora climbs to 2,800 — the best possible training for what's coming.

Days 3 to 6: the mountain

Here you choose your adventure:

  • Option A — Paramillo del Quindío (3–4 days): the roof of Quindío (~4,750 m), no glacier, no ropes or crampons. Endless páramo, frailejones and views of three snow-capped peaks. Our recommendation if it's your first time at altitude.
  • Option B — Nevado del Tolima (4–5 days): the five-star trek — a glacier summit at 5,220 m. More demanding, with technical gear, always with a guide. Before deciding, read what to pack.

For both we work with certified local guides: ask us for dates and prices at reception or write to us before your trip to leave everything arranged. While you're on the mountain, we store your big backpack for free.

Mountains not your thing? The week fills up without boots too: La Carbonera, the Santa Rita waterfall, a deep-dive coffee tour and a day in Filandia, the neighboring town of balconies and baskets.

Day 7: the reward

Come down from the mountain straight into what we've been promising you for days: the garden jacuzzi, a hot shower, a real bed and a long breakfast with Quindío coffee. In the afternoon, a slow round of the town's best cafés and some beans to take home. If you're moving on, the scenic route is Salento → Jardín by bus.

High-altitude treks taste better when the first and last nights are in a warm bed one block from the main square. Book your room for the start and end of the week — and let our reception handle the logistics in between.
